Nara is an easy day trip from both Kyoto and Osaka, and the official Nara tourism guide treats it that way: it says Nara is just over 30 minutes by train from Kyoto and Osaka[1]. The two things to sort out in advance are which station you use and how you will walk between the sights in Nara Park.

This guide sticks to what the official Nara travel guide says about access and the park. Where we add advice, we label it "Our view", so you can tell sourced information from editorial opinion.

How to get to Nara

From Kyoto, the official guide lists about 41 minutes by JR Rapid Express from Kyoto Station to Nara Station[2], and also about 34 minutes by Kintetsu Limited Express from Kyoto Station to Kintetsu-Nara Station[3]. From Osaka, it lists about 52 minutes by JR Rapid Express from Osaka Station to Nara Station[4], and about 34 minutes by Kintetsu Express from Osaka-Namba to Kintetsu-Nara Station[5].

Our view: the best choice is usually the line that starts closest to your hotel, because a short walk to the starting station saves more time than any difference between the two lines.

Know the two Nara stations

The official guide notes that Nara has two train stations: Nara Station on the JR Line and Kintetsu-Nara Station on the Kintetsu Line[6]. That matters because the stations are in different places relative to the park.

According to the park guide, Nara Park is a short walk east of Kintetsu-Nara Station[7], while walking along Sanjo-dori Street from JR Nara Station to the park takes roughly 20 minutes[8]. Our view: if you want to start in the park as quickly as possible, Kintetsu-Nara Station is the more direct arrival point, and if you are using a JR pass or JR tickets, plan for the longer walk or a bus.

Does a rail pass make sense?

Probably not for Nara alone. The official Nara guide notes that passes covering the Nara area include the Japan Rail Pass, regional JR passes such as the Kansai Area Pass, and Kintetsu Rail Passes[10], so a pass can make sense when Nara is one part of a longer trip. Our view: for a single return trip from Kyoto or Osaka, compare the pass price with the cost of the two tickets before you buy. Our rail pass guide walks through that comparison.

Nara Park: the main attraction

The park guide says the area is 660 hectares[11], and that almost 1200 wild deer roam Nara Park[12]. It also says you can expect fewer crowds than Kyoto and a more leisurely sightseeing experience[13].

The same guide advises that Nara Park is best explored on foot, but taxis can come in handy when visiting attractions on opposite sides of the park[14]. Our view: wear comfortable shoes and treat the park as a half-day walk rather than a quick stop.

Todaiji Temple and the Great Buddha

The official guide says Todaiji Temple, with its 15m high Buddha, is the most prestigious of the seven great temples of Nara[15]. It describes the Daibutsu as follows: The Todaiji Daibutsu is the largest bronze Buddha in the world, completed in 752[16].

The guide adds that behind the temple, Nigatsudo has lovely views of the city[17]. Our view: if you only have time for one major sight in Nara, make it Todaiji, because it is the temple the official guide itself puts first in its list of top attractions in the park.

Kasugataisha Shrine

The guide says Kasugataisha Shrine is on the opposite side of the park from Todaiji, connected by a pathway from Nigatsudo[18]. It adds that Kasugataisha Shrine has brass lanterns that are lit twice a year, in winter and summer[19]. Our view: this is a natural second stop on the walk back, and the route through the park is part of the experience.

The deer: what to know before you go

The deer are the reason many visitors come to Nara. The official guide notes that feeding the deer is an attraction in itself, and special crackers are on sale all around the park[20]. It also says deer are no longer sacred, but they are still protected[21].

How to choose between Kyoto and Osaka as a base

Our view: choose by what you want your evenings to look like, because Nara is a short ride from both. Kyoto suits a quiet, traditional stay, and our Kyoto accommodation guide compares the areas. Osaka suits eating out; read our Osaka food guide for ideas. If Nara is one stop on a longer route, our 7-day itinerary shows where it can fit.

Booking a guided visit

You can see the park without a guide, since the walking route is simple. If you would like history explained on site, guided tours are listed on Klook, Viator and GetYourGuide. Check the meeting point, language and cancellation terms in each listing before you pay.
